What should I consider when getting rain gutters?

April 7, 2014

When you are purchasing gutters you want to make sure you are getting what you need. This is after all a very important aspect of maintaining your home. They are more than a cosmetic plus hat is for sure! Rain gutters help with everything from water redirection and sinkhole prevention to foundation preservation.

When you have damaged gutters it can lead to serious trouble.

So, you may find yourself having to consider adding new gutters to your home. If this is the case then there are a couple of things you will have to ponder. You will need to think about the aesthetics, the price and the needed performance from the gutters.

You will have to consider your climate. If there are normally extreme temperatures or excessive elements like rain, snow and ice as well as a lot of foliage in the vicinity then these things really have to be weighed in on what type of materials your gutters will need to be constructed from.

One commonly purchased gutter option is vinyl. There are several benefits from choosing vinyl gutters. They are easy to install and easy to clean. They are already the color that you want them to be, and the color is permanent. You will not ever have to paint them. There is no corrosion or rust to be concerned with either. Vinyl is flexible, it won't dent and it holds strong in the elements. The downfall is that with age and in extreme cold temperatures vinyl can become brittle.

Another gutter option is aluminum. This is not dent proof, and rust is possible over time with this material. This is often used as a seamless gutter option, and it is relatively inexpensive.

Some people will use galvanized or stainless steel materials for their gutters. These are less popular and far more expensive.

Your types of gutters will be seamless and sectional. While the do it yourselfers will probably face the sectional gutter systems, the seamless seems to be preferred with homeowners. This is because the sectional gutters tend to leak and be harder to clean thoroughly. The seamless is a no clog version that is far more durable and easy to maintain.
